Baby Ryan Rockwell

Baby Katie Rockwell
See my sister Katie's website, too!

Born 8:16:30 PM, 15 December 2006, La Jolla, California.

8 pounds, 12.2 ounces (3,975g). 20" (51 cm).

The technical gobbledygook after each shot is the equipment I used for each photo. Many photographer friends ask.

08 November 2008, Saturday, 2PM

Ryan now can't stop saying "Noni" and "Bye!"

05 November 2008, Wednesday

Ryan has started to string words together, for instance, he'll say "Hi Dada" or "Bye Dada!"

29 October 2008, Wednesday

Ryan eating lunch

Lunch! Katie looks on. (Nikon D3, 50mm f/1.4 AF-D, f/4 at 1/60, NEUTRAL with +1 saturation picture control, normal ADR, auto A3 WB, Program auto, Auto ISO chose ISO 200.)

Ryan running with a screwdriver

Ryan running away with booty: daddy's screwdriver. All I usually show are photos taken in the few instants that Ryan holds still. Most of the time, we're spending our time chasing him and trying to get whatever he's about to kill himself with out of his hands. This is typical. He does know how to use the screwdriver to change batteries in his toys. (Canon SD880)

26 October 2008, Sunday

Ryan and the Jack in the Box

At Noni's. (Nikon D40, 18-55mm kit lens and SB-400 flash)

Ryan throws a candy cane

Ryan plays catch with a candy cane. (Nikon D40, 18-55mm kit lens and SB-400 flash. I should have remembered to use REAR sync so the candy cane would look like its flying away from Ryan, which it is.)

25 October 2008, Saturday

Ryan finally learns to recognize photos of his great-great grandma Mimi, with whom he shares the same birthday. That's great, but Ryan missed the boat: Mimi died last Tuesday, October 14th, 2008, and her funeral is tomorrow.

24 October 2008, Friday

Ryan in his pool. (Nikon D3, 50mm f/1.4 AF-D, NEUTRAL with +1 saturation picture control, normal ADR, auto A3 WB, Program auto, Auto ISO chose ISO 200, direct on-camera SB-600 flash. The D3 did all the fill-flash exposure adjustments automatically.)

07 October, Tuesday

Yikes, this kid thinks he knows Pro Tools, too! 1/125 at f/2.8.

Four shots: Nikon D3, 50mm f/1.4 AF-D, NEUTRAL with +1 saturation picture control, normal ADR, auto A3 WB, Program auto, Auto ISO chose ISO 200. it's amazing how well the colors look above, which are JPGs direct from the camera under mixed daylight and metal halide lighting.

28 August 2008, Friday

Ryan's first trip to Legoland, and especially their new Sea Life Aquarium, which just opened this month.

15 August 2008, Friday

Ryan's 20-month birthday.

Daddy and baby Ryan

Matching Daddy, as usual.

Baby Ryan eating breakfast

A leisurely full breakfast, as usual.

Ryan eating - fast!

Speed Eating. When Ryan heard mommy talking about how Olympic hero Michael Phelps eats about as much as other endurance athletes like American hero Lance Armstrong, about 12,000 calories a day, Ryan figured he'd show everyone that he also has what it takes to be a champion. (three shots: Nikon D3, 50mm f/1.4 AF-D, NEUTRAL with +1 saturation picture control, normal ADR, auto A3 WB, Program auto chose 1/60 at f/5.6, Auto ISO chose ISO 200, all with SB-400 flash on-camera and bounced off ceiling.)

13 August 2008, Wednesday

Ryan hurt himself for the first time. Ryan's been crawling up the stairs for about a year, and walking up and down since the spring, usually holding daddy's hand and the railing. Sometimes he goes for it and will take a few steps freehand.

Tonight Ryan preferred instead to crawl very carefully up the stairs, just for fun. Daddy was inches behind him as always to be sure he didn't fall down the stairs. Ryan's hand slipped a little and Ryan bopped his lip on one of the steps. OUCH! Ryan cut his lip. Like all minor facial injuries, it looked pretty bad at first because it bled so profusely, but after crying a couple of minutes just to scare mom and dad, Ryan quickly forgot about it and went about his usual trouble making. He did have a scab on his lip for a few days.

05 August 2008, Tuesday

Baby Ryan playing with hose

Ryan loves playing with hoses. (Nikon D3, 24-120mm "Streetsweeper" at 95mm, NEUTRAL with +1 saturation picture control, normal ADR, auto A3 WB, Program auto chose 1/250 at f/8, Auto ISO chose ISO 200.)

24 July 2008, Thursday

Baby Ryan opening door

Ryan's favorite toy: mom's car. Ryan knows how to say "Vul-va!" (baby talk for Volvo), then run around the house trying to get us to take him to it, reach in my pocket and grab my keys, grab the remote and press ULNOCK. Once unlocked, Ryan knows how to pull the flippy-handle (another safety feature of Mercedes: Ryan still hasn't figured out how to pull Mercedes-style door handles all the way open) and then grab the door in the open crack and pull it the rest of the way open.

Ryan will then adjust the electric seat. He scoots it all the way forward, lifts it all the way, and moves the seat back far forward. We didn't teach him this: he teaches himself by trying everything without fear. How do you think daddy learns everything? by trying everything to see what happens.

Baby Ryan and the Radio

(Nikon D3, Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 AF with 1A skylight filter, NEUTRAL with +1 saturation picture control, normal ADR, auto A1 WB, Program auto chose 1/125 at f/5.6 (top) and f/4 (bottom), Auto ISO chose ISO 200, crosshair focus mode.)

22 July 2008, Tuesday

We thought Ryan was just fooling around with the power seat controls in mom's car. No; in fact, he was adjusting the seat forward and up to fit himself better! We think he's just started to wave goodbye to people.

Ryan's been nodding "Yes!" for about a week. He understands perfect English, even if he doesn't say much.

Ryan takes good care of his sister. Along with many Vulcan mind-melds, he'll put her Binky back in her mouth.

10 July 2008, Thursday

Ryan and bottle

Ryan playing with a bottle. In this case, its a bottle of the Eastern Sierra's famed Crystal Geyser (Olancha-sourced) water. (Nikon D3, 50mm f/1.4 AF-D, NEUTRAL with +1 saturation picture control, normal ADR, auto A4 WB, Program auto chose 1/125 at f/1.4, Auto ISO chose ISO 900.)

10 July 2008, Thursday

Ryan is now pretty good at sneaking a DVD out of a drawer, opening the case, opening the DVD player drawer, popping in the DVD, and getting it to start.

09 July 2008, Wednesday

Ryan understands perfect English. For instance, if I ask him to lift up his left foot in the bath so I can wash it, he does. If we ask him to get us something from the fridge, he does.

He still doesn't say much. His favorite words are Yaya! for TV, along with mama and dada.

Today in his bath, he now knows how to unscrew the cap from his baby toothpaste, squeeze it onto his baby toothbrush, brush away, and put the cap back on.

07 July 2008, Monday

Ryan in bath

Bath Time!!! (wife grabbed preset camera: Nikon D3, 20-35mm f/2.8 AF-D at 35mm, NEUTRAL with +1 saturation picture control, normal ADR, auto A2 WB, Program exposure and Auto ISO chose 1/50 at f/2.8, ISO 280. I dodged faces later in Photoshop.)

Baby Ryan in wagon

(Nikon D3, 50mm f/1.4 AF-D, NEUTRAL with +1 saturation picture control, normal ADR, auto A3 WB, Program auto chose 1/500 at f/2 (because program was accidentally shifted as the D3 rubbed against dad carrying this all to the park), Auto ISO chose ISO 200.)

03 July 2008, Thursday

Today Ryan snuck in my office, and I saw him out of the corner of my eye grab something form the desk drawer. I followed him, and discovered he had nabbed a screwdriver and was proceeding to unscrew the battery door from his remote control car which needs new batteries. Not bad for an 18-month old who can't even talk.

New words: Ryan has said "Hi!," and also uses the word "ice" for his beverages.

He understands perfect english. While I was following around and he lost a part of the tool, I asked him where it was. He pointed to a corner, and lo and behold, there it was!
